For Christ’s Sake
American evangelicals have spent millions exporting Christian conservatism to Africa.
Since 2007, US-based Christian organizations have spent more than $68 million funding antiabortion and anti-LGBTQ initiatives across sub-Saharan Africa alone.
Where the money comes from and precisely where it goes is anyone’s guess — but an openDemocracy investigation found that the most generous of these right-wing religious donors, the Fellowship Foundation (or “The Family”), has pumped at least $20 million into Uganda, where their associate David Bahati — the MP for Ndorwa County West and current minister for trade, industry, and cooper-atives — was responsible for introducing the Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2014 that made same-sex relationships punishable by life imprisonment. Bahati’s initial proposal sought to make homosexuality a capital offense.
