In 2016, 97% of sports bets in the US were made illegally. With the overturning of PAPSA, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, in 2018, legal sportsbooks are now on the rise — but illegal wagering still outranks the legal variety. Experts attribute the continued rise in illegal gambling to the overall visibility lent to sports betting in recent years. Meanwhile, legal sportsbooks are doubling in revenues each year, but they’re still sustaining huge losses as they spend millions on advertising to close the gap.
