Despite sixty years of US blockade, Cuba continues its impressive medical research and development.

The Cuban biotechnology sector is state-owned, state-financed, state-planned, and the source of some of the greatest medical breakthroughs of the last 30 years. In many countries, biotechnology is in bed with venture capital. But in Cuba, the sector works closely with — and for the good of — public health.

Gender equality in Cuba, which Fidel Castro called the “revolution within the revolution,” skyrocketed post-1959 as women accessed education, entered the skilled workforce in large numbers, and advocated for themselves politically.
