At Starbucks, There Are No Workers, Only “Partners”
A December 2021 missive from managers at the Elmwood Avenue location of Starbucks in Buffalo, New York, after workers voted 18 to 9 in favor of unionizing, shared by Starbucks Workers United on Twitter.
Subject: We are all partners
Dear Elmwood Partners,
We have results of the vote and I want you to hear directly from me we had 8 NO ballots, 19 YES ballots and 0 challenged ballots. This means that the majority of partners at this store voted YES to having Workers United represent you in collective bargaining.
Our Camp Road location made the decision to vote AGAINST representation. At this time a decision has not been made regarding our Airport location. The store had 9 NO ballots, 15 YES ballots and 7 challenged ballots.
I want to thank everyone who turned out to vote — this was the most important thing we could ask you to do, and this was a strong turnout for our store with 75% participation.
I am saddened that in the end the majority of you decided it was best for Workers United to represent you to myself, your District Manager and your Store Managers. Everything we love most about Starbucks is the direct relationship we have to each of you and our ability to work together to create a better tomorrow. This is my greatest hope for you and all of us.
This outcome changes nothing in the immediate term. However, I do have one wish for all of us. We’ve heard a lot of partners say they are tired of the campaigning and some tension they’re feeling at work. I get it and I agree. My ask is that with the election over we move away from the divisive, “us versus them” feeling that has changed our work environment. Above all else, regardless of how we voted and what we wanted, we are all partners.
As always, please reach out to me if you have any questions or simply want to talk. I’m here for you and will plan to be in the store in the coming days to be present as you process the outcome of the election.
With love,
Michaela Murphy
