Who Cares What Army?
Though their time as a band was brief, the Monks represent a “what if” of the convergence between GI resistance and the 1960s counterculture.

Years later, the group would refer to the sound of their music as “over-beat.” It is fast, primitive, and hypnotic. The drummer might be on speed (and likely is), and the organ player is obsessed with hitting the same three notes over and over. Meanwhile, the bass player is doing his best not to fly out of the pocket, and the guitarists (actually, one guitarist and one electric banjo player) are clearly dispensing with the boundaries of rhythm and melody.
