Jacobin Finally Gets the Key to the City

The people have spoken, and they’ve elected a democratic socialist poet-philosopher to run New York City. You know what that means: Jacobin is finally getting the municipal privileges we deserve. And we don’t just mean double parking (though we will be doing that). We will also no longer be sorting our recycling — frankly, it’s bourgeois.

Under the Zohran Mamdani administration, the future of the city looks brighter than ever. We’ve already made a deal to move our offices into the Hall of Ocean Life at the Museum of Natural History, where the squid and whale diorama will help remind our staff of the ongoing struggle between labor and capital. The New York Yankees will now be taken into receivership by the city. (We suspect that the World Series slump, which curiously began the year of Jacobin’s first issue, in 2010, has been one long capital strike by the Steinbrenners.) The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will be used to initiate the Mamdani Plan for full citywide socialization of major enterprises, most importantly Gray’s Papaya. The unfinished section of the Second Avenue subway line will be converted into a vast underground archive for Jacobin back issues and unsold tote bags. And best of all, city residents will be automatically subscribed to our academic journal, Catalyst, whether they like it or not.

But we’re not there just yet. Even under Mayor Mamdani’s benevolent socialist regime, the city isn’t quite ready to cut us in. So to keep publishing the essays, polemics, and memes that make the ruling class nervous, we need your support.
