Where Have All the Political Footballers Gone?
“Football gives meaning to life, yes. But life also gives meaning to football.”

As if Kapadia’s film Diego Maradona is a superb documentary, but it’s also a time capsule from another age. Watching it, you can’t help comparing Maradona to his fellow Argentine Lionel Messi.
If Kapadia wanted to make a study of Messi’s life twenty years from now, he would have little to work with: a highlights package of wonderful goals, interspersed with talking heads paying tribute to Messi’s footballing genius. The extracurricular drama of Maradona’s life would be entirely absent.
As far as Messi himself is concerned, this is probably no bad thing: he’s better off without Maradona’s cocaine habit, alleged domestic violence, or compromising ties with the Neapolitan Camorra. But something important has been lost along the way, too. Maradona’s career sheds light on some of the great political dramas of his time.
